Supported ContentMarkdown Imports

Import your Markdown notes

You can bring an existing Markdown vault into Recall in one go, with up to 10,000 notes and attachments combined per import. Obsidian and Notion exports are supported, as are ordinary .md files.

This is a newer feature, and we want to hear how it works for you. If anything looks off, or you have ideas for how we should improve it, email support@recall.it.

How to import your Markdown notes

  1. Open Recall on desktop. Large zip files are easier to upload there.
  2. Click Add in the top-right corner of the app to open Add Content.
  3. Select Bulk import at the bottom of the pop-up window.
  4. Choose Markdown Files.
  5. Upload one or more .md files, or a .zip of Markdown files. Use the zip you exported from Obsidian or Notion.
  6. Click Import.

Each import can contain up to 10,000 notes and referenced attachments combined. Images and other files count toward this limit. For larger imports, split your notes and their attachments into batches of no more than 10,000 in total, then import each batch separately.

Recall does not treat the import as a flat dump of files. It uses the structure already in your notes:

  • Tags from your existing structure. Folder paths become nested tags. A note at Projects/Recall/Meeting notes.md is tagged Projects/Recall. Tags in YAML frontmatter are imported too, including nested tags written with / (for example Areas/Tech).
  • A batch tag for the import. Every note in the batch also gets a tag like imports/markdown-YYYY-MM-DD-001, so you can find the whole import in one place.
  • Connections from [[wikilinks]]. If a note links to another note in the import with double square brackets, such as [[Meeting notes]] or [[Meeting notes|today's meeting]], Recall creates that connection automatically. Notion-style links and relative Markdown links to other files in the zip are resolved the same way.
  • Images and other files. Images and attached files referenced by your notes are imported with them.

AI-generated summaries and AI-generated connections are not created automatically during a bulk import. Wiki-style links you already wrote are. You can generate AI connections later from the Connections tab when you want them.

After importing

Your notes become Recall cards, so they sit alongside everything else in your knowledge base.

  • Chat with your notes: ask questions across the import by @-mentioning the tag that contains them.
  • Keep writing: open any card and continue in the block-style editor. Type [[ to add more connections.
  • See the graph: open Graph view to see how the imported notes link to each other.
  • Quiz yourself: generate questions from your notes and review them with spaced repetition.

Once your notes are in Recall, they sit alongside everything else you save. See AI Notes.

Note
  • Bulk Markdown import is available on Plus and Max.
  • Upload a .zip for Obsidian vaults or Notion “Markdown & CSV” exports. Unzipped folders are not accepted.
  • If a [[wikilink]] points to a note that was not in the import, Recall cannot create that connection yet.
  • Re-uploading the same zip does not skip notes that are already in Recall. Split large vaults into batches of up to 10,000 notes and attachments combined instead of repeating the same file.
  • If you run into any issues, email support@recall.it and tell us what you uploaded and what you expected to see.
